Cardiology is the specialty that deals with the diseases or disorders connected with the heart. It is the study of the heart and its functions whether in health or disease. A physician who treats heart ailments medically is known as cardiologist, and the cardiologist that specializes in surgery of the heart is known as cardiac surgeon (Heart Specialist).

Cardiologist is a specialist in diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart diseases, valvular heart disease, electrophysiology, coronary artery disease and heart failure. The main function of the heart is to pump blood and circulate it throughout the body.

Blood circulation in heart is of two types:  systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation.  When the blood is pumped from the body, it is known as systemic circulation, and when it pumps blood through the lungs, it is known as pulmonary circulation.

Heart diseases can affect the heart’s muscles, valves, heart’s electrical system, and the coronary arteries that feed the heart muscles.

Following are the common heart diseases:

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD):  This is a very common, but a deadly form of heart disease. This is the disease of the blood vessel that supplies blood and nutrients to the heart.

Heart valve disease:  This means that the valves that regulate blood flow in the heart are not functioning properly.

Heart Rhythm Problem:  Most people experience sometime or other, some problem related to heart beats, palpitation known as cardiac arrhythmia.

Syncope (Fainting):  This is loss of consciousness. It indicates a serious medical problem and can be a sign of impending, sudden death.

Pericardial disease:  Pericardial sac is like a protective pouch that surrounds the heart. Some of the diseases affecting pericardium can be fatal.

Congenital heart disease:  These are heart defects   present at birth that involves abnormalities in the structure of the heart. These birth defects can lead to more complex heart problems in later life.

Heart Failure:  Many types of heart conditions can cause heart failure; but the symptoms and consequences are always very fatal.

Heart Attack: Various diseases and conditions of the heart as described above and ultimately lead to heart attack or cardiac arrest.
